A new nursery school was commissioned yesterday in the community of Eastville (Annandale South), East Coast Demerara.
The construction of the Eastville Nursery School began in March 2016 and it was completed in August of 2017 at a cost of $20M.
At the commissioning ceremony held in the school compound, Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, said that the construction of the school reflects the commitment of the Government of Guyana towards the renaissance of the school system with unprecedented investment.
She said that the school will provide quality early childhood education and will cater for children with special education needs.
Minister Henry explained to the parents and children in attendance that as the children progress, they will benefit from a system that provides quality education for all.
Minister Henry noted that as 21st-century students, they deserve to learn in a 21st-century environment. She said that the various interventions being implemented by the Ministry of Education, its officers and teachers are to ensure children access nothing less than what they deserve.
Assistant Chief Education Officer (N) ag, Samantha Williams, gave a bit of history about how the school became a reality.
She said that the late Clyde Roopchand, former Chief Planner of the Ministry of Finance and the Regional Democratic Council had recognized the growing need of a nursery school in the community due to the overcrowding in sister schools.
She said that the school is evidence of the commitment to ensuring that education is accessible to nursery aged children.
According to Williams, the school has the capacity to host 120 children between ages three years six months and five years six months. She said that the school will ensure that children will be equipped with prerequisite skills to cater for life-long learning.
Regional Chairperson of the Regional Democratic Council Region Four, Genevieve Allen, said that in 2015, a feasibility study was done and in the education plan for the region the construction of the school was included.
She said that education is important for the development of any nation, region, and community. She thanked the Ministry of Education through which the funding for the school was provided and the Management Team for the Eastville Co-opera
tive Society for playing an integral role, particularly since the land for the school was donated by the co-op society.
