Windies were fired out by Sri Lanka for 93 in the second innings which is their lowest total since 1930 and the 26-year-old Jason Holder, one of seven Bajans in the side, said they lost the game with their second innings batting performance.
“We just did not have enough runs in the second innings. They fought back well last evening (Monday). It put our bowlers under pressure to come and do something special. We lost it with our batting in the second innings,” said Holder who took over the Captaincy in 2017.
“Even though we only gave them 140 to win, we knew we could do it. But we missed some chances in the field. But it won’t put us down. We have to have a quick turn around with the series coming up next week,” Holder added.
Holder was named Man-of-the Series for his 198 runs with one fifty and 12 wickets including 9-60 in this Test match and admitted that this was not the end his team were looking for and credited Sri Lanka for a good performance.
Holder has led the West Indies in 23 Test Matches and his win in the first test in Trinidad was only his fourth, while he has lost 14 and drew five of the other 19.
The Windies Captain said there were a lot of positives from this series.
“Gabriel was outstanding. I must commend him. Dowrich was outstanding as well. Roach needs to be mentioned too. A few good top-order partnerships would have helped but we are working hard to get better,” concluded Holder, who has two tons and six fifties and 53 wickets from 29 Test matches.
And 26-year-old Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich was named Man-of-the-Series for 288 runs at an average of 57.60 with a century and two fifties in bowler friendly conditions.
“I’ve had good performances throughout the series. It would have been nice to win today but credit goes to the Sri Lankan bowlers. This performance gives me a lot of confidence with a series starting next week,” informed the diminutive Dowrich.
“I think we put up a good fight and our bowlers came in strongly as well, but as I said the Sri Lankan bowlers really set us back. I have a back injury, but I will get some therapy before the next series,” said the Bajan who is one of only five West Indian Keepers to score 1,000 Test runs.
Also speaking after the game was Sri Lankan Captain, Fast bowler Suranga Lakmal who took over after Dinesh Chandimal had lost his appeal over a ball-tampering charge and was banned from playing in this historic Test.
Lakmal said he was delighted with the result. “I feel so happy. It’s my first Test as captain. Very happy! I didn’t expect it. I thought it was a good opportunity to lead and I took it. I’m happy with my contributions but also the three fast bowlers all did very well, along with the spinner.”
