With the aim of unearthing new talent, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday launched a ten-day youth programme which is set for August at the Queenstown venue dubbed the ‘Home of the Legends’.
The camp will cater for male and female cricketers under the age of 18. They will be exposed to fundamentals of the sport and skill development, both on and off the field. Former first class batsman Mark Harper will serve as the Technical Director of the clinic which targets some 120 youths.
Harper will be supported by Garvin Nedd, former West Indies test players, Travis Dowlin, Reon King and Roger Harper along with national fast bowler Paul Wintz.
Mark Harper stated that apart from the basics of the game, the programme will include classroom sessions, as well as master classes, where the older participants will learn more about the art of spin and fast bowling, batting and fielding.
Former Guyana off-spinner Nedd said that the camp is designed to produce well-rounded cricketers and noted that over the years a number of players who participated in the camp went on to represent Guyana and West Indies at various levels.
Among those who came out of the camp are Ashmead Nedd, Sachin Singh, Raymond Perez, Sherfane Rutherford, Ronaldo Ali Mohamed, Tevin Imlach and Keemo Paul, all of whom have represented the West Indies at the youth level, while Essequibian Paul earned a call-up for the third test against Sri Lanka which ended yesterday.
Nedd pointed out that the club has a rich history of producing some of the most exciting cricketers who have graced the world over with their talent among them being Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, Philbert Blair, Roy Fredericks, Mark and Roger Harper, Andrew Lyght and Linden Joseph.
President of DCC Roger Harper indicated that the programme is being held annually and serves to improve the level of the game in Guyana and the West Indies. Harper said the programme is open to youths countrywide and is calling on corporate Guyana for support.
Sessions will be held from Monday to Friday from 09:00hrs to 15:30hrs daily. Participants are asked to attire in track or short pants, white tee or polo shirts, track boots and socks along with cricket white clothing.
