Workers of the Demerara Harbour Bridge will attempt to remove a car that went off the retractor span Friday evening, from the pontoon on which it landed.
While no one was hurt, attempts to remove the car, which is lying on its side on one of the pontoons, on the north-western end of the retractor span, had to be abandoned.
According to Rawlston Adams, General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the truck that the bridge owns does not have sufficient power to lift the Toyota Carina sedan.

Bridge workers will remove the pontoon today and take it to the EC Vieira wharf in Houston to remove the car.
Although the bridge has a contractor who owns a bigger lift truck, it was advised that the management should not attempt to do it this way because of the obvious risks, Adams explained.
The Bridge Management has come up with a plan. According to Adams, they will remove the pontoon on which the car is resting and float it down to the E.C. Vieira wharf in Houston where the vehicle will be removed.
“We were scheduled to continue with our maintenance cycle in any case. So we won’t have to close the bridge.”
According to the General Manager, he does not have the full details of the investigations of the incident.
“We were busy with our maintenance. I should have the report on Monday.”
Because of the delays and manpower that would be involved, Adams disclosed that it has not been ruled out that the driver of the vehicle be made to pay the costs.
Unlike the Berbice River Bridge, the retractor span area of the Demerara Harbour Bridge does not have side rails in cases of incidents like this one.
It is unclear whether the driver was speeding or lost control for some reason.
What is known is that the Harbour Bridge has some very powerful cameras.
