Omar Williams, formerly of Abanastraat, “K” Flight, Paramaribo, Suriname, was on Friday handed a 12-year jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
In other words, Williams, 36, a father of seven, accepted that he unlawfully killed 37-year-old Sheldon Cheddie also known as ‘DJ Cheddie’ of Lot JC-946 Jackson Street, Tucville, Georgetown on September 9, 2013.
Williams who was represented by Attorney-at-law, Mark Waldron, appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown where he was indicted on a murder charge.
He however, opted to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
In brief remarks to the court, Williams begged for forgiveness, not only from the family of the deceased but also from the State. He expressed that not a day goes by without him thinking of what he could have done differently on that tragic day.
State Prosecutor Lisa Cave told the court that on the night of September 9, 2013, Williams and others were outside of the Selassie Snackette in ‘Turning Point’ Tucville, Georgetown where they were conversing.
The prosecutor said that Williams walked up to Cheddie who was sitting with some friends and pointed a gun at him.
According to the Prosecutor, Williams discharged several rounds at Cheddie who sustained injuries and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead in arrival.
His cause of death was given as haemorrhage and shock due to multiple gunshot wounds.
During a plea of mitigation, Waldron told the court that his client has been extremely remorseful for this unfortunate incident. He said that his client who has been incarcerated since 2013 seized the earliest opportunity to take responsibility for his actions.
In this regard, the lawyer begged of the court to temper justice with mercy.
Justice Kissoon in calculating a sentence for Williams started at a base of 25 years.
The judge then deducted 1/3 of that amount having considered Williams’ early guilty. The judge then arrived at a 12-year custodial sentence having made further deductions for mitigating factors.
Prosecutor Orinthia Schmidt appeared in association with Prosecutor Cave.
