Three bandits armed with guns invaded a Providence Community in the wee hours of Thursday morning and carted off millions of dollars in cash and personal items.
Marcia Narine, a 29-year-old businesswoman of 2690 Green Acres, Providence, East Bank Demerara, a gated community, is estimating her total losses in excess of $6.5 million, after three armed bandits invaded her home around 2:30 am Thursday last.
Mrs. Narine told this publication that she was awakened by her maid crying and speaking in Spanish, “Please don’t hurt me or the little girl”.
Mrs. Narine then attempted to make her way to the room where her maid and eight-year-old daughter were, and was confronted by one of the bandits who had gained entry into her room.
It must have been that he used a key from the outside, since the door was locked from inside. By that time, the bandits had already gathered the fourth occupant of the house,(Mrs. Narine’s uncle) and had tied-up the Cuban maid, Mrs. Narine’s eight-year-old daughter and her uncle.
Mrs. Narine was left untied while the bandits took her around the house asking for money and valuables.
In this process, they took US$9,000, $700,000 in local currency, $2.5 million in jewellery, six cell phones, three flat screen TVs, and two Laptops.
The bandits also carted off a quantity of clothes and footwear.
The whole ordeal lasted for about 90 minutes during which Mrs. Narine and her uncle were beaten and threatened with death several times in the presence of her eight-year-old daughter.
Mrs. Narine was even threatened with rape at one time, when one of the bandits made a strange request for her to give him the password to a phone that she had all the information relating to her business contacts.
This request was also made for a laptop that she used for her business. Mrs. Narine said, this was very worrying and led her to believe that it was an inside job, since the information on the Phone and Laptop, was vital only to persons in her kind of business.
Mrs. Narine said that she did not know how the bandits left, because she took some time to untie herself, but they would have had to have transportation to move the stuff since it was a lot.
She however knew they came over a trench and entered the house through a kitchen window, since the grill was damaged and there were footprints in the yard leading to the window, from the fence, which was at the side of the trench.
Mrs. Narine also said when the ordeal was over and she went to the entrance of the community to tell the security guard what had happened and get a call for help, the security guard told her that he did not see anyone strange pass in or out.
A report was made to the Providence Police Station and Mrs. Narine told the police of her suspicions of an ex-employee who was fired because of his untrustworthiness.
The man has since been arrested but was released on bail, as investigations continue.
