Inaugural Youth Business Summit set for May 23

The Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport will be hosting its inaugural Guyana Youth Business Summit on May 23-24, 2018 at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.
The two-day summit, which will run from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, is geared at encouraging entrepreneurship among Guyana’s Youth population, so as to significantly reduce the country’s unemployment figures.
Apart from inspiring entrepreneurship, the forum is also ideal for helping young businessmen and women develop their existing businesses.
“The Guyana Youth Business Summit will provide a forum for the exchange of information between pertinent private and public sectors entities that speak directly to youth entrepreneurship,” said Melissa Carmichael, Director of Youth.
She added that the summit will even facilitate the submission of business proposals by participants.
“On the second day, they will be given a chance to present their proposals to a panel for possible selection to receive startup capital,” Carmichael said.
She explained that the summit will feature presentations from private and public sector organizations.
“These presentations will definitely be rewarding for the participants. They will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge that can significantly impact their lives and career,” Carmichael added.
As it is, registrations have started, and young people from all across the country are being encouraged to apply.
According to Carmichael, “Participants will be selected on a first come, first serve basis. Once the registration reaches 100, there will be no more places available.”
The Youth Director added that participants from Regions 1,2,3,7,8,9 and 10 will be facilitated for the two days by the Department of Youth.
All proposals must be in line with the aims and objectives of the Science Technology Engineering Agriculture Anthropology Archaeology, The Arts Architecture Mathematics Spirituality (S.T.E.A.M.S) project as indicated on the Ministry of Education website: http://education.gov.gy/web/index.php/projects/yipog
However, participants or organizations are to register only with the Department of Youth under the Ministry of the Presidency.
According to Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton, the Summit is part of the Government’s drive to ensure that young people are gainfully occupied.
“It can never be overstated that our young people are the future, and we, as a government want to ensure that they are fully equipped with the tools needed to be successful,” Dr. Norton said.
“We want to curb unemployment by making our youth self-sufficient. We want them to think like leaders and not mere employees,” Dr. Norton noted.
“If participants do not make it into this quota for the Summit, their application will go on file and remain there for first consideration at the next Summit,” the Youth Director disclosed.
