– Chairman claims
SCHOOLS reopen across Guyana today after the Easter holidays and while students look forward to the beginning of the new term, for some teachers across Region Ten it means heading back to work under conditions that they say are far from conducive.
Chairman of Region Ten Rennis Morian in highlighting some of the issues prevailing at several schools declared, “ Teachers in the Region are working under duress and are afraid to speak out because of fear!”
Morian pointed to a case where a teacher from a school in Amelia’s Ward broke down in tears while relating her experience with the school’s administrators.
He posited that the case was not an isolated one as he is in receipt of reports from teachers detailing experiences that are negatively impacting them. He said that there are several other issues that he is aware of, but which teachers are afraid to highlight because of possible reprisals.
Mackenzie High School
Over the years residents of Linden have been observing with much concern the decline of this premier Secondary school with some persons calling for the disbandment of the school’s board.
Concerned parents have complained of several issues that are impeding the growth of the school including those that are tarnishing its former impeccable image.
Washroom Facilities
The washroom facilities at the school are reportedly in an unsatisfactory state and this is nothing new.
A few years ago, teachers had downed tools over the atrocious state of the facilities. They had protested at the doors of the Regional Education Department.
The situation was subsequently rectified, but presently the facilities have retrogressed.
Several other issues at other schools were highlighted including the provision of three bolts and a door lock for St Aidans School, which had been requisitioned over three months ago, but have not been supplied.
The Regional Chairman who has responsibility for education, said that it is time that teachers within the Region start working in comfortable environments.
He suggested that any correspondence regarding issues that need rectifying at schools should not only be forwarded to the Education Department, but should also be forwarded to REO Orrin Gordon simultaneously so that these could be dealt with alacrity.
In correspondence seen by this publication, several issues affecting the smooth running of schools and performance by teachers have been highlighted, with some teachers pointing to what they claim is the discrimination being perpetuated with regards to promotions and transfers and the sometimes unwarranted “disciplinary” actions meted out to some.
