Yussuf century hands Fisherman Masters eight-run win over Regal Masters

Led by a fine unbeaten century from Unnis Yusuf, Fisherman Masters defeated Regal Masters by eight runs to win the final of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL) Pooran Singh 50thbirth anniversary softball tournament which was contested on Sunday at Malteenoes Sports Club.
Yussuf struck an unbeaten 124 to guide Fisherman Masters to a commendable 183-3 off their allotted 20 overs, batting first. Pacer Laurie Singh handed Regal Masters the breakthrough when he bowled Ramo Malone for five with the score on 25. Mahendra Hardyal then removed Jagdesh Persaud for 10 before Singh sent back Troy Ramsaywack for nine leaving the score at 62-3. However, Yussuf and Zameer Hassan put on 126 for the fourth wicket to steady the innings in favourable sunshine. Yusuf struck 11 fours and eight sixes while Hassan made 31 not out with three fours.
Singh claimed 2-17 and Hardyal 1-30.
Regal Masters were off to solid start with Mahase Chunilall and Eon Abel adding 98 for the opening stand to set their team well on course before Chunilall was bowled by Stanley Mohabir for 38 after hitting two fours and a similar number of sixes. Abel and Mohendra Arjune (09) then took the score to 124 before they both fell in quick succession to Yussuf; Abel slammed seven fours in a top score of 62.
Tidy bowling and fielding by Fisherman Masters thereafter then restricted Regal Masters batting. Their batsmen were guilty of trying too hard and perished attempting to hit out. However, despite losing Hardyal for 14, David Harper for one and Lynden Lyght for four, the match came down to the wire with 12 needed from the final over. But with Eric Thomas still at the crease Regal Masters could have still prevailed, however when Thomas perished for 22, Fisherman Masters breathed a sigh of relief as Regal Masters finished on 180-7.
Yussuf claimed 3-19 to take the man-of-the-match award, while Mohabir had 2-26 and Pooran Singh 2-31.
Fisherman Masters overcome HS Masters by four wickets in their semi final encounter. Batting first, HS Masters managed 142 all out in 10.5 overs. Danny Mohanram made 37, A. Sukram 25 and Clyde Hoyte 19. Pooran Singh and Zameer Hassan had two wickets each.
Fisherman Masters responded with 146-6 in 16.2 overs. Yussuf and Hassan got 28 each, while Nadram Samlall had 3-32. Regal Masters beat Tropical Spring in the second semi final.
