Over 14,000 pupils sit 2018 NGSA

Over 14,000 pupils from schools across the country have been registered to sit the 2018 National Grade Six Assessment [NGSA] which commenced yesterday. NGSA is a school-leaving assessment which is designed to determine where pupils will undergo their secondary level education.
It is expected that the results of the NGSA this year will yield significant results. This is owing to the efforts injected by the Ministry to prepare pupils for assessment. This translated to mock examinations [or trial exams] and NGSA camps which helped to address the weaknesses pupils had.
Speaking about the mock exams, Director of the National Centre for Educational Research Development [NCERD], Ms. Jennifer Cumberbatch, said this was necessary to ensure that pupils acquaint themselves with the examination, since there will not be much difference, aside from the questions. The Director had also underscored the importance of a collaborative approach among teacher, parents and the Ministry in order to realise additional gains.
During the sitting of NGSA, pupils are tested in the subject areas of Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science. The two-day assessment, which will conclude today, is likely to turn into an exciting affair for pupils at some schools. This is in light of plans announced by the Ministry of Education to distribute kites upon their completion of the assessment today.
A release from the Ministry said that “The Minister of Education, Hon. Nicolette Henry and the Chief Education Officer, Mr. Marcel Hutson, will be distributing a number of kites tomorrow [today] to children after they would have completed their National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).”
The schools that have been identified for this activity slated to commence at 15:25 hours are St. Agnes Primary, Rama Krishna Primary, F.E. Pollard Primary, Enterprise Primary and Ketley Primary School.
