GWI going ‘green’ at its offices

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is embarking on an initiative that would see the utility company’s office water supply being powered by alternative energy.
Managing Director of GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, said the utility company is considering the possibilities of solar energy since it more lucrative.
The initiative, he added, is congruent to that being undertaken in the hinterland and coincides with the government’s Green Agenda.
“We are looking at alternative energy sources to drive some of our systems. Quite a few of the hinterland systems are driven by photovoltaic so we’re looking at the possibilities in some instances, hydro, solar and also wind,” Dr. Van West-Charles related.
Further, the Managing Director indicated that the company is continuing in its quest to implement solar-powered water wells in every Hinterland Region. He noted that some water systems in Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine) are already driven by windmills.
Solar panels have a long lifespan and the maintenance is not prohibitive. Therefore, these are considered the best means by which to provide access to a quality and cost-effective water supply in all communities across Guyana.
GWI is working along with the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) in this regard.
