Renovations to the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), which cost a sum of US$7M, are on schedule to be completed on the May 27 deadline, leaving only electrical works, painting, and the instillation of IT equipment to be done.
The building was closed in December 2016 after cracks and uneven settling of the ground floor which caused tiles to shift, were observed.
In addition to the issues originally identified, works were also done to the entrance gate, internal walls, electrical lighting panels and washrooms.
The renovation is being done by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, the company that built the ACCC.
Speaking to the media yesterday at a tour of the ACCC, Managing Director, Nancomar Ramdial said when the renovation began, the contractor found additional works that also needed attention.
“We also experienced exactly what many contractors find when they go to a building to repair one fault; we found a lot more structural and other types of damage,” he said.
Ramdial explained that all the meeting rooms at the ACCC were completely modernised with new equipment for better service and additional capacity.
Some of the new equipment added to the ACCC are a public address system, electronic screens, video conference equipment, air conditioning and Wi-Fi equipment.
Ramdial said the ACCC will now become an internet hotspot. He explained that the main Conference Hall will be equipped with a new Digital Conference System that can accommodate three different languages spoken simultaneously, with video tracking capabilities
The Arthur Chung Conference Centre, formerly known as the Guyana International Conference Centre was given to Guyana as a gift from the People’s Republic of China in 2006.
Over the years, apart from conferences, the centre has been used for events such as graduations, receptions, religious functions, among other things.
