Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, late President of Guyana. The occasion is observed in several countries where large numbers of Guyanese reside.
Last Sunday, the Indian Diaspora Council (IDC) in New York recognised the former Guyanese leader at a function at which eight proclamations and citations were awarded posthumously. IDC President, Ashook Ramsaran, organised the programme which was attended by several dignitaries.
His granddaughter, Vrinda Jagan, daughter of his son Joey, received the accolades on behalf of her late grandfather. Some came from the Governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo; New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio; Queens Borough President, US Congress Member, Grace Meng; Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz; and a few State Congressmen and Senators.
Another function will be held at Liberty Palace in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York on Sunday. Former Culture Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, will be the guest speaker.
On Wednesday, March 28, next, a programme has been organised by Guyana-born journalist John Mair at the the Guyana High Commission in London in which two well known Guyanese historians, Professor Clem Seecharan and Eric Huntley, will outline achievements of the late Dr. Jagan. Professor Seecharan is currently writing a book on Dr.Jagan and the Cold War.
In Toronto, the Association of Concerned Guyanese and the United Muslim Association in Canada will honour the Guyanese leader tomorrow night at a night of reflection of the late PPP leader.
