The Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA) has announced that two of its athletes have qualified to participate in the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) to be held in Barranquilla, Colombia, following their participation at the recently concluded CAC Taekwondo Qualification Tournament.
Adrian Spellen, who entered in the Middleweight category and Justin Choy, who competed in the Welterweight division, both earned spots for Guyana at the 2018 CAC Qualification Tournament held recently in Monterrey, N.L, Mexico.
Choy was off to a slow start when he was defeated by his opponents from Cuba and Puerto Rico. The action however soon heated up as he dominated his opponent from Honduras by a 25-9 margin.
As the fight continued, Choy once again delivered a resounding victory when he defeated his opponent from Curacao by a 29-10 margin which resulted in Guyana earning its first spot for Taekwondo.
The other athlete, Spellen, is a seasoned campaigner and it is expected that he too will do well at the Games. Both athletes have expressed gratitude for being able to compete at these events and have expressed thanks to their Coaches, Trainers, Masters and the GTA for affording them the opportunity.
Meanwhile, the GTA executive has also expressed their joy and satisfaction in having the two athletes represent and qualify for the CAC Games. The public is being reminded that Taekwondo classes are held at the Guyana Teacher’s Union Hall, Woolford Avenue every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 17:00hrs to 18:30hrs.
