Chairman of Ogle Airport Inc., Michael Correia, is accusing Kaieteur News of publishing libelous material in a series of articles surrounding the daily management of the Eugene F. Correia International Airport.
In an application filed on March 16, 2018, lawyers for Correia are seeking among other things, in excess of $5 million for libel, an injunction restraining the defendants from publishing the published or similar libels and an interim injunction restraining the defendants from further publishing the published or similar libels.
The proceedings filed in the High Court by the law firm, Fitzpatrick, De Caires & Karran highlight a series of articles for which the businessman is claiming that the newspaper carried out a sustained campaign of libel against the Plaintiff.
According to Correia, between March 2 and March 11, 2018, Kaieteur News printed and published articles in relation to his office, business, profession and operation at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport.
In his application, the Plaintiff referenced the contents of said articles and satirical column “DEM BOYS SEH” which he believes that Kaieteur News meant or were understood to mean that he (the Claimant) participated in a fraudulent, secret and corrupt scheme to procure for the use of a company controlled by him, a large piece of State land.
Correia further stated that the publications accused him of participating in a secret and corrupt scheme to procure for his family all the benefits to be derived from control of that land to the exclusion of other entitled individuals and as part of that scheme grabbed up land, therefore participating in the disadvantageous distribution and misuse of the airport land while unethically excluding local operations.
According to Correia, the articles, among other things, featured innuendo and information which accused him of dishonourable, unfair, tyrannical and reprehensible enrichment at the expense of Ogle Airport Inc and other airlines and companies operating out of the said airport.
He emphasized that as a consequence the information has seriously damaged his character, credit and reputation, and has brought about public scandal, revulsion and contempt.
The businessman noted that unless restrained by the Court, Kaieteur News will further publish libelous material against him.
