– threatened to burn her with acid
Eight months after being on the run, a taxi driver, who allegedly threatened to douse his ex-girlfriend with a corrosive substance after she refused to rekindle their relationship, was yesterday remanded to prison on an unlawful wounding charge.
Thirty-seven-year-old Curtis Edwards appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The allegation against Edwards is that on July 8, last, at South Road, Bourda, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Desmona Taylor.
The unrepresented accused denied the allegation after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant. The prosecutor told the court that the victim and the defendant once shared a relationship, which was ended by the victim because of constant abuse.
He added that on the day in question, Edwards went to Taylor’s workplace and she told him to leave her alone. Edwards then replied “I’m not leaving, because I don’t want the relationship to end.”
The court heard that Edwards then became annoyed and began to use a series of expletives, and told Taylor, “If I can’t have you, no one else can’t have you.” He then threatened to burn her with a corrosive substance. The prosecutor added that Edwards then picked up a metal fan and dealt Taylor several lashes about her body, before slamming her head into a metal grill, resulting in injuries.
The matter was then reported to the station and the police could not locate Edwards until a few days ago.
The Magistrate after listening to the Prosecutor remanded Edwards to prison for the safety of the victim.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 4 before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
