In a bid to resuscitate the art of drumming in Guyana and to make Guyana the number one drumming location in the Caribbean and the world, the Corwyn Fitzroy Williams Entertainment (CFW), headed by Corwyn Williams is seeking to create a platform for drummers.
Yesterday, the organization hosted the first ever Drum Festival to enable Guyanese drummers to gain recognition and to share their talents.
The festival was officially launched yesterday with a sterling performance by the Akishta drummers from Georgetown, Congo drummers from Berbice, Pouderoyen drum group, Stewartville drum group; Den Amstel drum group, along with Georgetown drum group.
CFW representatives have already reached out to persons who drum on the streets, in church, temple and other places to inform them of the event.
“We will be targeting those in the streets, those who are well organized, those who are dying for recognition,” said Alex Williams, Public Relations Officer at CFW Entertainment.
“If you are doing the tassa drums, if you’re Chinese and you’re drumming…it will all be combined together,” Williams added.
He explained that drummers have been crying out for years that their talents are not being recognised and thus, the creation of Drum Fest is necessary to give such resignation.
Drum fest, which is expected to be held on June 3, at the National Park, will not only be about exposure, Williams said—even though that is one of the main reasons for the festival—but drummers will also be competing against each other for $1.1million in cash and prizes.
Williams noted that such incentives are necessary since it gives motivation and encourages persons to participate.
Even though the event is slightly competitive, Williams explained that the event is a drum festival which would give exposure to talented drummers who may need recognition in Guyana.
It is his hope, he adds, that Guyana becomes the premier location in the world for drumming events and to also attract tourists to the country.
