US teacher trainers for Berbice literacy confab

In promoting and supporting Literacy in Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne, the Department of Education in collaboration with the Medgar Evers College of New York will host a three-day inaugural ‘Regional Literacy Conference’ under the theme ‘It’s all about the children’.
The conference will commence tomorrow and conclude on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Each day, it is scheduled to begin at 8:30 hrs and ends at 15:00hrs, at the St. Francis Community Developers Conference Centre, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to Literacy Coordinator, Ms. Simone Dainty, this is one of the many initiatives to be hosted by the Region to improve the literacy performance of pupils at the national levels.
With support from overseas-based Guyanese professors from the Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York, administrative staff from the University of Guyana Berbice Campus, along with present and past members of the central Ministry of Education, this literacy conference is geared to provide professional training and development to teachers and their literacy supervisors.
The event is one that caters for teachers of the primary schools in the region, reading teachers from each secondary school and Six-Year Transitional teachers. They will be exposed to an in-depth training to teach the reading components and other subjects of literacy which relate to Language Arts.
The teachers will all be exposed to interactive sessions and presentations based on professional deportment, special education and learners’ welfare matters.
According to Dainty, members of the Regional Literacy Committee and Infant Field Officers will also receive special training to enhance their competence and abilities in supporting and supervising the literacy programme, and in giving teachers relevant support and guidance in the execution of the literacy curriculum.
