Dear Editor,
Our Guyanese, Hindu brothers and sisters across the length and breath of Guyana, were happy that, Phagwah or Holi had been celebrated by all the Hindu organizations on Friday 2nd March, 2018.
Phagwah was celebrated, forty days from the planting of Holika (castor oil tree). The festival signifies the victory of good over evil and spring marks the ending of winter. The festival of colours is popular with non Hindus participating.
The burning of Holika took place on the evening of Purnima (full moon) Thursday 1st, March,2018 and thereafter the actual celebration began. On the morning of Phagwah, Friday 2nd March,2018, all mandirs or temples had their services (pooja), singing of chowtal and the commencement of playing with clean water, colour of abeer, abrak, power and sharing of sweet meat made the day.
The occasion was celebrated with the true meaning and spirit of Phagwah. I take this special opportunity to commend the Guyana Pandits Council, who worked assiduously with other organisations to make our main festivals a reality, by observing on the same date by all organisations.
Thanking you for publishing my letter as early as possible.
Yours Truely,
Parmanand Ram.
