Man found guilty of raping girl, 8

GUILTY: Collin Cummings

A 12-member mixed jury yesterday convicted Collin Cummings for raping an eight-year-old girl. The jury returned at around 14:30hrs with a unanimous guilty verdict.
The court heard that on August 20, 2016, in the county of Demerara, Cummings engaged in sexual penetration with an eight year-old girl. However, even after he was convicted, Cummings, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Clyde Forde, maintained his innocence. In his address to the court, the convict said, “I am innocent of this charge brought against me. I would like the court to know this.”
Cummings then went on to tell the court a story claiming the circumstances under which the child was molested.
Trial Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall then interrupted Cummings telling him that the jury had found him guilty. The judge also asked of him if he had anything to say in mitigation.
“Miss, I am not guilty,” Cummings professed.”
Throughout his address to the court, Cummings showed no remorse whatsoever. His lawyer requested that a probation report in relation to his client be presented to the court before sentencing is imposed. The lawyer’s request was granted by the judge who adjourned the matter until next week Wednesday (March 7) at 09:00hrs.
