Eleven months after being charged with attempting to smuggle marijuana into the Camp St. prison, Stephan Sobers yesterday walked out the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts a free man, after the matter against him was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Sobers, 23 of Vergenoegen, East Bank Demerara was on trial before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, after it was alleged that he was caught attempting to smuggle narcotics into the prison.
The allegation was that on March 28, last, Sobers attempted to smuggle 113 grams of marijuana into the Georgetown Prison. The defendant had pleaded not guilty to the allegation and was out on $150,000 bail.
The Magistrate at the end of the trial told the court that there was insufficient evidence and the prosecution team was unable to prove its case against the defendant.
Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd, who represented the defendant, had presented a no- case submission on his client’s behalf and it was upheld by the Magistrate.
It had been reported that Sobers was arrested after he had left the jail to purchase food, and upon his return was stopped and searched, during which time the ganja was unearthed. It had also been reported that three packs of Bambu wrapping paper were also seized from the prison officer.
