Works have started on this piece of land, at left of photo, located south of Francois Street, Campbellville. Residents had objected when similar work started more than a year ago without their knowledge. It had reportedly been earmarked for a recreational area.
Officials of the Mayor and City Councillors of Georgetown had said then they were moving to beautify the land with walkways and seats.
However, residents of the area are insisting they are hearing it is now being converted to a banquet hall – something that would be illegal, as the land is on reserve land. Behind it is the waterway from the conservancy leading to the Guyana Water Inc. Shelter Belt facility which supplies Georgetown.
The area is an upscale one, with a number of businessmen and professionals living there.
Yesterday, the Public Relations Department of the M&CC was asked to respond, but up to press time, despite a promise to get back to this newspaper, there was no answer.
