Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to a letter that was published on November 21st by Mr. Peter Persuad.
Where was Peter Persaud when the Transport and Harbor was neglected? No money to effect repairs or schedule docking, no acquisition of ferry to replace aged vessels that were plying the North-West route. To crown it, Transport was sidelined by the PPP administration, it was barely existing, the entire administration of Transport was made into a political tool. The PPP cares nothing about the North-West people, they allowed existing vessels to deteriorate without replacement. Making it a burden to some and for goods and supplies to go to and fro. The current administration from day one brought relief, the Lady Northcote was docked and back in operation. The MV Barima was out in record time for a Passenger-cargo vessel, plying the Georgetown North West route. Very soon the MV Kimbia will be back in operation, all of this is shown by a caring government, who has the development of our country and its people at heart.
If the PPP had love for people of the North-West District which is mainly populated by our indigenous brothers and sisters they would have made transportation easy.
The people of the North-West district depend on everything coming from the Coastland, before 1993 farming was booming, but sadly it was single-handedly killed by the PPP administration, imagine eddoes coming from the Coast land when it’s supposed to be farmed and coming from the North-West District, the people are not farming and cultivating crops like they used to. The boat when leaving town is loaded with perishable greens, meat, eggs, fruits, provisions etc. If these goods don’t go with the available transportation present there would be starvation in North West.
The staff and management at the wharves of the Transport and Harbor Department must be complimented for their professionalism that contributes to the smooth and effectiveness of dispatching the vessels.
The present boat is too small but they are doing a great job to alleviate shortness of essential items in the North-West District. I know in time it will get better. With all of that said, I’d like to conclude by saying to Mr. Persaud that your missive is inappropriate and out of touch with reality, instead of critiquing, encourage.
