Receiving a very handy tool that will be used to save the lives of Guyanese yesterday was the St. John’s Association of Guyana.

Chairman of the St. John’s Association of Guyana, Mr. Vibert Parvatan (right) receiving the donation from the Ambassador of Malta to Guyana, Viscount Roland de Rosiere.
The automated external defibrillator is a tool that is used to correct heart rhythm through an electric shock. It is very helpful in the event of a cardiac arrest or if a person’s heart stops beating. The defibrillator reportedly costs just about US $1200.
This abnormal behaviour of the heart is caused by ventricular fibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation occurs when insufficient oxygen reaches the heart or when the heart is damaged as a result of heart attack.
While making note of the importance of the tool, Chairman of the Organization, Vibert Parvatan, said that when a heart attack occurs, Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is not always the most effective in restarting the heart, but however plays a vital role.
He went on to explain to those in attendance, among them retired Managing Director and councillor to the organization, Mrs Olga Christiani; Public Relations Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital, Mitzy Campbell, Inspector Griffith, Doctor Ropert Paul and the Ambassador of Malta to Guyana, Viscount Roland de Rosiere, that the donation is much appreciated.
Parvatan said that the Ambassador visited in May of this year and saw the need for such a tool to not only strengthen the work of the St. John’s Association Ambulance Brigade but to also benefit the people of Guyana.
In relation to the utilization of the defibrillator, Parvatan said that persons received training in London during June which equipped them with the skills they need to use the apparatus.
He said in addition to this training, his staff members are also trained to offer assistance to persons that are choking, drowning or maybe have even fainted.
The chairman of the organization said that he is also planning to extend the services that are offered by St John’s Brigade to all administrative regions in Guyana. This, he said, was even approved and welcomed by President David Granger.
By expanding from the Cowan Street, Georgetown, Linden and New Amsterdam locations, he said that the need for trainers will become necessary.
The extension programme, he said, will hopefully be completed over a three year period and intends to accomplish its own ambulance, also during this period.
