Dear Editor,
The Kaieteur News article, ‘New GECOM Chairman misled President on CV’, on Friday, November 3, 2017, makes public a most worrying admission from the new GECOM Chairman, James Patterson.
The new GECOM Chairman is already facing questions about his ability to act in an impartial way in heading the Elections Commission, as well as questions about his integrity.
Integrity, according to President David Granger, is an important factor in deeming a person as “fit and proper” to be appointed as GECOM Chairman. So while, Mr. Patterson admits that he lied on his CV, does that not speak about his lack of integrity? Should he not resign as the GECOM Chairman?
Another newspaper on Friday, November 3, 2017, reported that Mr. Patterson has admitted to being friends with former PNC Leader, Desmond Hoyte. This second admission and the fact that Mr. Patterson was a pallbearer at a private PNC funeral ceremony for Mr. Hoyte, brings us back to the question about Mr. Patterson’s ability to act in an impartial manner.
If Mr. Patterson remains in the post, more questions about why the APNU+AFC Government want him in that position will be raised.
This situation does not bode well for the state of confidence in future electoral processes.
Regards,
Cedric Lord
