Students must rise up against UG’s injustice and mistreatment

Dear Editor,
Our country is dying its slow death and the hope of a saviour is nowhere in sight. How we came to this point? Guyana’s history has it all written. Looking ahead where do we go and what hope do our poor fellow Guyanese have as faith, for social change, economic relief and quality social service.
The answer lies in a few if not all the Students of the University of Guyana, the next generation leaders, the grassroot of leadership in Guyana. But how do we start and where? The students must start taking a stand first to fight against the inequality and injustice both happening in the University and our country. Mr. Editor while the Vice Chancellor have been running around the country and Caribbean signing MOUs which is good for the administrative and financial part of the University.
The students have been slapped in the face with frequent black outs, seats penetrating their bottom and ripping their trousers and skirts, walking all over campus looking for WIFI (most of the time don’t work), a dusty, dark, hot library (can’t accommodate half the UG student population), students sitting on walk-way having lunch, Students lost on Campus, over flowing classes, filthy washroom etc. and I can go on. Is the UG Administration saying that the hundreds of thousands of hard-work for dollars students are paying not good enough for things to be a little decant?
Having our university in this condition I wonder if it’s a demonstration of how the UG Administration and my fellow Guyanese prized education. What can one do when most of the students and the UGSS just accept these horrific conditions? We the student must come together and be a generation that generate leaders and not just fall in the political and social trend of Guyana. Student should stop putting up with this institutional injustice and not wishing and hoping they graduate sooner to escape the plight of the University. We should come together and kill the “rat-race” spirit that is breathing on the harsh condition students must put up with when gaining a certificate for a better life.
Our sleeping UGSS should wake up from its years of long sleep and start generating solutions so that every occurrence of a students’ nightmare should be the last of its kind. Since prep- A of primary school I know of students taking part in sports and when one starts UG, there is a badly organised athletic sports yearly, no proper sporting facility for students and not just that; our timetable is not designed for students interested in sports.
And if one’s not interested in sports, there is no alternative venue or activity for students to take part in. An award should be given to the UGSS and the UG Administration for great contribution in the cause of “killing sports in the heart of students” and other valuable contribution not given to the students.
If the students don’t stop one day and look, stand up and rise to this critical occasion of crime, injustice, degraded, inequality and oppression, our nation might as well continue to crumble while new bridges are being made, but remember our problems are man-made and they can be solved by man. Editor I believe our country cries can be solve with the most common work of us all, for we all share the same interest of our children’s future.
