Dear Editor,
In Kaieteur News dated October 12th 2017, it is reported that the city policeman involved in sexual misconduct with a juvenile two months ago is still on the job and has not been charged. It is also reported that he was involved in a similar incident in 2016 and in that matter, charges were not laid because of the lack of sufficient evidence. Is this going to be the case again? Why is the City Council investigating instead of the police and why is the Child Care and Protection Agency not involved?
Child Protection Week, under the theme “Partnering with Families and Communities for the Positive Outcome for Children “, has just concluded, but not one of us – communities, government agencies, organisations or the police – is doing enough to protect children from abuse. The tragedy of 13- year old Leonard Archibald is the latest and one of the worst examples of this collective failure: as the whole country learned, the man who raped and murdered Leonard in his own community was a well-known child molester who had been allowed to stay out of court or prison by everyone who knew or had even heard a rumor about his criminal behaviour but did little or nothing to stop him.
Note that we are not saying that nothing is being done but affirming that all that has been done it is still not enough. About a week ago, at a vigil organised by Child link, a Childcare and Protection Agency Officer, Ms. October in her remarks said that child abuse should be everybody’s business, and that is what we in Red Thread & Grassroots Women Across Race ( GWAR) have been saying for many moons . The trouble is, everyone says it but few put the words into action.
It is often said that it takes one woman to bear a child but the whole community to raise it.Where has all the old protection for children gone? Where is the compassion and love that would prevent us from turning a blind eye, when it suits us, letting paedophiles destroy our children? All of us, each individual, each community, each institution and each organisation – all of us have to start thinking about each child as though she/he is our own and go the extra mile to ensure the protection of our children. In the present case of the city policeman, justice must prevail. We hope that the case will not fall through the cracks but will set the example to prevent other occurrences. We will be watching carefully.
