16 Cadets graduate from Maritime Administration Programme

Sixteen Cadet officers graduated from the Maritime training programme on Friday

The training programme was initiated by former Works Minister. Robeson Benn. This graduation exercise was hosted by the Maritime Administration Department.
The programme is a five-year course during which the officers explore different terrains and equipment. Some of the trainers were Eon Hudson and Jeffrey Bobb.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson; Director General of the Maritime Administration Department Miss Claudette Rogers; Harbour Master Maritime Administration Department, Michael Tennant; and Dr Astell Collins were the guests of honour.
Some of the topics were ship organization, life saving skills, metrology, navigation, ship investigations and inspections.
Harbour Master Tennant stated that shipping plays an important role to various communities in vital development and that the world depends on safe secure efficient shipping industry. He also said that shipping needs high calibre personnel. The new captains must make every effort to be innovative and impact their work. “Your attitude will determine your altitude”.
Director General, Miss Rogers stated, “It is the first time in maritime and shipping history that women will take the helm.”
She added that although the training was hard, perseverance and determination helped the cadets. She also told the new captains that although life is full of uncertainties, press forward.

She also said that their choice in the present will determine their future. She also highlighted the fact that four women will be masters in the maritime trade.
The Minister stated that she is happy that there were females participants in the field loaded with men.
The minister elaborated that these new captains should make the sea safe for all. The problem Guyana has is that it lacks compliance with the international regulations.
She also stated that the shipping sector needs the right employees. For this officers must be properly trained.
Reflections from the graduates embodied their daily struggle to success. They stated that they were exposed to different lands and areas, training and assuming different positions though many of the officers on the ships would disregard them because of their age.
They also expressed that they experienced sleepless nights. They supported each other no matter what. The most heartfelt position for every officer there was the home sick feeling and the seasickness..
The women of the Maritime programme expressed their honour at being be the first women to graduate as Cadet Officers and Captains in Guyana.
They said that it was difficult; they missed their children and family at home but endeavoured despite that to success.
They also reiterated that women are meant to be more than just housewives and that they have different talents. They all ended by thanking the maritime department for the opportunity.
The maritime administration department has impacted Guyana through this training in providing crucial personnel training to Guyanese so that they can train others.
The Minister also stated that the programme should be advertised and hold exhibitions so it can attract younger people .The organization needs to now plan and advance the programme so that Guyana’s development in shipping can have a bright future.
