A 26-year-old taxi driver of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was remanded to prison on charges which alleged that he was in possession of illegal arms and ammunition.
Dexter Waithe, a father of two, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 17, at Itabali Police Check Point, he had a .32 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
He further denied that on September 17, at the same location, he had five rounds of ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that Waithe was the driver of a motorcar when it was stopped and searched by police ranks who found the gun with ammunition concealed in the bonnet of the car.
However, an Attorney-at-Law for Waithe refuted the prosecutor’s testimony.
According to the lawyer, at the time of the search there were several other persons in the vehicle and that the gun could belong to anyone of them. The lawyer disclosed that two other persons were arrested in relation to the matter.
Prosecutor Moore opposed bail for the defendant citing the fact that no special reasons were raised to satisfy the court. This objection was upheld by the Chief Magistrate who instructed Waithe to make another court appearance on October 12, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
