Dear Editor,
Perhaps the greatest dilemma facing Guyanese is who to blame, voters or their leaders or both in the progress (?) made since Independence. One finds it hard to understand how a country with a small population and endowed with mineral deposits, fishing resources and undeveloped agricultural land can be continuously referred to by foreign media & others as impoverished? One wonders how a gold and diamond rich nation can remain poor.
What will be different when oil revenues come in? One must ask whether we have leaders capable of seeing reason over race, sound economic & social policies over party partisanship. Unfortunately, Guyana is not alone as a country with resources and still in poor condition due to leadership. To push diversified development, the government must invest in joint ventures with investors and where possible help start-ups and local enterprises to develop and expand into value added products. We should have negotiated for a bauxite processing plant & small oil refinery under some form of joint venture as part of our development plans. It is time to become aggressive in seeking better outcomes for Guyana from our natural resources. A new National Unity Party or leaders seems necessary if we are to do better, just saying.
