A West La Penitence, Georgetown family is mourning the loss of one of their loved ones as a result of a vehicular collision which occurred on the Goed Fortuin Public Road, West Bank Demerara, at around 03:00 hours yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Joseph James.
The victim was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital in an unconscious state where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.
Kaieteur News understands that James, a father of three, of Walker Terrace, West La Penitence, Georgetown, was on a motorcycle, heading north along the West Bank Demerara Public Road at Goed Fortuin, when he was struck by a minibus.
The impact reportedly catapulted the motorcyclist into the air, and he ended up in a nearby trench.
James’ sister, Shavonne Nicholas told Kaieteur News that she was informed of her brother’s demise shortly after the accident occurred.
“Some people come calling for me at 3:30 am this (yesterday) morning and tell that me that me brother get in accident. I just rush out put on me clothes and we went up to Pouderoyen. By the time we reach, people tell we he dead pun the spot.”
Nicholas said that her brother had travelled to the West Bank to visit friends.
“He does usually go over to the Friday night hang that dey does got at Pouderoyen.”
The woman explained that based on the condition of the scene, her brother had little or no chance of surviving the accident.
“The motorbike that he de riding went in pieces on the road.”
She told this publication that her brother leaves to mourn his three young children ages 11 years, 5 years and two months.
Meanwhile, police in a statement explained that investigations revealed that the driver of minibus BSS 9898 was proceeding north along the public road when he struck James, who was proceeding in the said direction on motorcycle CH 9495.
After he was struck, Police claimed the rider allegedly lost control and ended up in a western trench.
Additionally the statement revealed that the minibus driver‘s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.
During the initial investigation the driver claimed that he was proceeding north along the western carriageway when he stopped to urinate and in the process was robbed of his jewels, by the occupants of a car who then forced him into his vehicle (the minibus) and drove off with same and in the process struck down the motorcyclist. However, police said that the driver’s account of the accident contradicts that of a person who witnessed the accident.
The bus driver is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
