– vehicle recovered
Yesterday afternoon, 60-year-old taxi driver Walter Sanmoogan was robbed and forced to run, as his car was hijacked. The incident occurred around 16:00 hrs. Sanmoogan explained that he was working at the time.
He said that he had offered his services to a young lady who was in Robb Street by the Guyana Post Office. The young lady asked him to drop her off in the vicinity of D’Urban Backlands.
Sanmoogan said that when he arrived in the area, he was told by the woman to stop by a male individual in front of a house who was going to pay him. He recounted that the situation quickly spiralled out of control when the man, after giving him the money, pulled a gun on him. The man then robbed him of his belongings and told him to “run up the road”.
Sanmoogan said he did as he was told as he feared for his life. He said when he had run for some distance, he turned back just in time to see that his female passenger and the man who had robbed him, had made off with the car.
The man said that he reported the incident at the East La Penitence police station, where the ranks told him that they would investigate and give him an update on the matter.
The car, a silver Toyota Premio, was reportedly later found in Mocha, East Bank Demerara, and is now with police at the Providence station.
This is one of several recent carjackings.
On Monday, a man was questioned about hijackings on the East Coast of Demerara since he had reportedly admitted to stealing a car and fleeing from police.
Last Thursday, two men robbed a lecturer and stole his car in the vicinity of Bel Air. The victim has since offered a reward.
Over the past week, a pastor and her husband were held at gunpoint, in the presence of their 11-year-old daughter, by three men who robbed them and then took their car – a silver-grey Toyota Premio. They also are offering a reward.
Last June, a police officer who is also a librarian was robbed and in the process shot in her stomach for her car. The robbers reportedly had taken her keys to the car and house, along with her cell phone. She had acquired the vehicle a few months ago.
Carjacking is becoming more and more prevalent countrywide, but particularly in the capital.
