Dear Editor,
About promoting, implementing and hoping to receive oversea votes in Guyana’s general elections, where are such votes to come from? The folk who left B.G. before and shortly after Independence for oversea territories are now pensioners, settled in the countries of their choice, with extended families, comfortable and may lose the benefits earned, mainly through their hard work. I remember the UK reminding returnees that there is “no reciprocal financial arrangement with Guyana”, so pension payments and other things financial would be affected.
I know of a case where a returnee to Guyana worked there, earned ‘good’ money, vowed to remain and enjoy the sunshine, never informing his UK local government employers of his whereabouts. His pension payments were sent to the family home in the UK and looked after by his youngsters. Someone reported him to his employers, and the game was over. The choice – UK or a less favourable arrangement. He stood to lose too much and returned to the UK.
Some of us in the UK, now in our twilight years, still recall the mayhem caused in post-Independence general elections, when ‘phantom voters living at phantom addresses’ appeared on Guyana’s Voters List, perhaps actually seeming to vote, distorting the true picture, returning the reigning government to power. Many of the ‘enablers’ are no more. Once bitten…. Back to the drawing board!
