Dear Editor,
For ages we’ve stood by and watch the devastation that unfolds when men seek supremacy. We’re all privy to the destruction and the mayhem that can occur – and that which has, already been inflicted upon this world and its inhabitants. Millions of souls sent to the great beyond all because of a few selfish human beings.
In Guyana, our people have suffered at the hands of men that sought power – not to elevate the downtrodden, but to take from them everything – even their common sense. Yet we run around like blind mice dancing to the tune of these pied pipers with their evil song which seeks only to rattle our minds and take away the joy from our hearts. These selfish men have caused nothing but division and hatred. You now see it on the streets; you hear it in the airports and in the supermarkets. The hatred that we have for our kin is growing every day.
Why seek to divide us when we exist in a time when we need each other the most, I ask. Politicians maybe? No it cannot be! There are regarded as the gate-watchers, the promoters of peace and all things good. Wait, I do however, agree that some are unruly. Yes of course, I recall a few with tongues quick and sharp; slicing flesh and brain matter as thin as a neurosurgeon’s blade.
I recall one that stood at the podium as we celebrated Freedom Day here in Guyana, and he spoke about valuing freedom. What freedom? We have never been free. Our masters might have changed but now we are slaves to your kind Mr. Politician! The shackles might have been taken off our limbs but you and your kind have placed it in our brains.
We the people suffer whilst you and your foes engage in unnecessary, frustrating and disrespectful tit-for-tact. I have lost all faith in our politicians Mr. Editor. It saddens me to say that from the looks of things, life as we know it in Guyana is changing rapidly for the worse. Take some time out of your busy day my fellow Guyanese and pay attention to our politicians. Listen carefully to their words and tones; feel their vibrations; and you will see the direction they’re heading.
They are salivating at the black gold. They are hypnotized by what it can do. I, like so many others, believe that there is going to be a quick gobble up as soon as the “answers to all our problems” makes its way to the surface. My advice, I feel obliged to share, is stand with your forks ready to pry from the clutches of those that seek to take what is rightfully ours, lest suffer the faith of so many others before us.
Cornelius Maximus
