Dear Editor,
Once again the Town Clerk of Georgetown, who has no legal training or background in law as is required for the post that was handed to him, is pretending to be a legal luminary. He has capriciously and ill-advisedly rushed off and dispatched to the two garbage contractors, notification letters of the termination of their contracts with the city because they were forced to suspend their services due to the non-payment of fees owed since way back in 2015 by City Hall.
The imprudence and arrogance of this action is just simply galling, and leaves one to wonder for how much longer the City Council, the Ministry of Communities and the Government of Guyana is going to put up with the egotism, ineptitude and duplicity of this officer.
Had this officer been familiar with the tenets of breaches of contracts then he would have been aware that it was the Georgetown Municipality who was first in breach of contract due to the non-payment and for not paying on time for the services these contractors provided.
Aside from the legal ramifications and remedies that he may force these contractors to pursue, the questions to be asked is whether this gentleman expects these two garbage collection companies to glibly continuing to outlay cash for fuel, for payment of staff, for wear and tear and maintenance of the vehicles, for tipping fees, licensing etc whilst not being paid for two years now?
Does this gentleman expect the two contractors to just sit and watch him squander the city’s finances on frequent overseas luxury travel by the Fantastic Four with no tangible returns for the city, on paying a bloated staff structure of nearly 1000 workers, many of them relatives, friends and church associates of Council’s bigwigs and who receive super salaries for doing nothing, on ridiculous and unnecessary projects like building presidential parks, like going on weekend retreats to hinterland luxury resorts, and on the purchase and use of luxury vehicles, bodyguards etc?
Clearly this letter of notification of contracts by this officer to these two contractors is nothing more than a blatant act of bullyism, a foolish attempt to intimidate the garbage companies, and a complete disregard for the health and safety of the citizens of Georgetown.
