Dear Editor,
Please permit some space in your most informative newspaper for me to express my disappointment. Before the 2015 general elections the campaigners of the coalition knew that one day Guyana will become an oil producing country but campaigned saying that they will boost sugar and rice production and make agriculture their priority. What is happening today?
You hardly see or hear anything about agriculture as a priority. I wonder if the subject Minister really understands the importance of this sector. I doubt it. We should have a qualified young, experienced, junior Minister in this sector because this Agriculture Minister seems too inexperienced and weary, Guyana has fertile lands and tropical climate where we can produce almost everything. We have some ministries that are useless and they have a Senior and Junior minister in them only wasting taxpayers’ hard earned money.
Mr. President I humbly ask that you take a moment after church on a Sunday morning because I know you are a very religious person and focus on food production which will not only make us self sufficient and to export to the Caribbean and beyond but we will earn foreign exchange. And at the same time help our small industries will blossom and grow by processing our tropical organic products for the world market. At the same time, we will take care of our unemployment problems, and more people will return to the land.
A country like the USA gives priority to AGRICULTURE & TOURISM and here we have 83.0000 square miles of fertile lands and we are neglecting this important sector while we wait for OIL MONEY. What happens if the price of OIL continues to fall? Britain has already announced beginning 2040 no GASOLINE & DIESEL cars will be allowed to run on its roads. What happens if other developed countries follow Britain, Mr. President Please give it some serious thought, because a bird in the hand is worth millions in the bush.
Mr. President, I suggest you develop 25 twenty five miles of roadway as the first phase along our rivers and creeks and put D&I infrastructure in place and give lands to farmers where we can produce organic products, while you employ qualified offers ( not military men ) to guide in the processing and find markets around the world. I read in the press of taking agriculture to Region 9 where we have developed D&I infrastructure. How long will this take? Why neglect what we have in our hand and dream of something we cannot handle? If we are going to sit, fold our hands and wait for our dreams come true, this nation will surely die hungry.
