Dear Editor,
Guyana has been rocked by another prison fire and yet another jailbreak. The circumstances surrounding both events are highly suspicious and very controversial. Rumours are flying everywhere “official” and unofficial” and persons are wondering what or who to believe. I have deliberately placed the two words official and unofficial in lifted commas to establish the pertinent point – which is which – is it official that should take precedence or is it the unofficial.
And this is the problem with this whole scenario of a place called Guyana where nothing is full-proof and nothing absolutely nothing is guaranteed. So, let us look at what can be considered legitimate and what should take precedence. In the first place the prison fire and subsequent jail-breakout was something well planned and meticulously executed. The Coalition government of David Granger should have had intelligence on this plan, because the COI that was conducted after the 2016 fire revealed that there was a plot to burn down the jail.
President Granger also confirmed this when he said “the Camp Street fire was an accident waiting to happen.” Well, if they knew that it was a potentially dangerous situation, then why didn’t they act on it in time? Why didn’t they carry out the recommendations of the Commission? Why did they sleep on it and allow the situation to deteriorate to catastrophic proportions? An entire prison is razed to the ground whilst we have notorious criminals roaming free.
Question number two, where did all those guns and ammunition come from? Rightfully so this is a high security area, but how come all that weaponry got into the hands of the criminals? We were told that a prison officer was relieved of his weapon, but that is only one firearm, however, where did that other cache of weapons that the ex-prisoners have in their possession come from? The news feed also revealed that other high powered weapons were abandoned by the escapees which were later recovered by the lawmen.
What a security mess in a government who promised us full security if ever they got into power. Further to the argument with such “top” legal and military personnel in the government why can’t we get to the bottom of this? Questions and more questions. Finally, the notorious bunch after their escape, made their way straight to Buxton. Why Buxton? They did not go to any other community but to the safe haven locale of Buxton. A place that was sympathetic to the criminals’ cause in 2002-2006. Buxton you would recall was a haven for the 2002 escapees who wreaked havoc in society. It was a bloody mayhem of an affair that left scores of people dead with the debilitating effect of a country paralyzed by fear. Are we to come to the conclusion that this recent breakout will be a repeat performance of 2002? Only time will tell.
