Doctors operating on acid attack victim, Shondell Williamson, are positive that she will
regain her sight after the surgeries.
The mother of two, who was doused with acid by her estranged lover on January 19, last at New Amsterdam, is presently in New York undergoing surgery.
SHEA, the organization that assisted Williamson, reported that the woman underwent the first of her three scheduled surgeries around her eyes and lip last Thursday.
Regarding her eyes, the doctors operated to reopen her left eye, which was sealed due to her injuries, and they prepared the surrounding areas for vision correction surgery. She now has to wait for about four weeks before she undergoes vision correction treatment.
“The doctor who will perform her vision correction surgery is one of the top three doctors in the field, and he is extremely optimistic that her vision can be restored,” SHEA noted.
Kaieteur News understands that phase three of her treatment will focus on further skin grafts and corrective surgeries.
Williamson, a mother of two, suffered severe burns following an acid attack. It is alleged that her reputed husband, Alfred De Jonge, called “Not ah Bai” committed the act, while disguised as a woman.
He has been remanded to prison and is currently facing attempted murder charges.
In a signed statement, Williamson related that she was at a friend’s house when she noticed an individual dressed in a wig and women’s clothing approaching her.
She stated that she could not verify who it was at the time because of the darkness, but she
noticed the manner in which the individual walked.
”I was standing inside the yard; the person came from the left. I was about seven feet away from the person and as the person got near I recognized it was Alfred De Jonge, my children’s father”.
Williamson had stated that De Jonge, who is the father of her two sons, had a container in his right hand and as she was about to call his name, he threw the contents of the container in her face and about her body.
According to the woman, “It felt like hot water”. She further disclosed that the liquid believed to be a corrosive substance began to work into her flesh, her back, chest, both hands and feet began to burn. “I felt a burning sensation about my body”.
De Jonge escaped after dousing her with the substance. Williamson’s friend rushed to her rescue and immediately took her to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was admitted and eventually transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital.
Her attacker was caught the next day after he was involved in an accident along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. He was treated for injuries sustained in the accident and subsequently charged.
