In Guyana, those who have eyes to see, should be able to see that there is now an abundance of evidence that we live in a society in which the laws are being broken and the respect for life and property is at its minimum. Our society has become corrupt and lawless and is being overrun by bandits who prey on the elderly and the innocent.
Drugs lords and violent gangs are responsible for the crimes which have afflicted and defaced the nation for more than a decade.
Although police data show that crime is reducing, the media continues to report to the public almost every day about some robbery. Murders are so random and senseless in society that the killers do not even know why they are killing. Today, children especially boys, do not have proper role models in the home and have turned to crime as a result of peer pressure.
Women are being disrespected, raped, physically abused and sometimes murdered; children are being physically and sexually abused and exploited and bribery and corruption are rampant in society. Minimum wage continues to be substituted for slave labour and an unconscionable banking and monetary system is ripping off the masses to enrich the wealthy and powerful few. It has become increasing clear that we now live in a society where the rich are getting richer and the poor are becoming poorer. Efforts by the ruling elite to reverse this unethical and immoral trend are made daily but the change will not happen overnight, maybe, in the long run.
Many believe that most of the traditional moral values of society have been cast aside for a modern culture that focuses on sexism, violence and crime. Even the movies glorify such a new society to the extent that the gullible in our midst accept such a life as the norm. They would only relate to what they know. Any other life portrayed would be seen as unreal and fictitious.
But in the real world the family is the bedrock on which society is built. Indeed many are waging a relentless war against the moral values embedded in the family structure. They are seeking to replace it with an immoral modern culture. Should they succeed, the family structure may one day suffer the same fate as the monastic way of life in western Christianity or it might eventually become redundant and disappear altogether.
To the extent that society has lost some of its moral values in many countries including Guyana, one just has to take a careful look at what is happening in some of the most powerful countries in the world. Same sex marriage is accepted in the United States, Canada, Britain and many other developed countries. Children are allowed to grow in homes comprising two daddies or two mummies. They are taught at school that such a family structure is morally and socially acceptable.
It should be clear to everyone that not only societal values are being attacked but the institution of the traditional family is being destroyed.
Guyana is a classic example of a rapidly collapsing society in terms of moral behavior. It is suffering from incurable promiscuity. It is being asked to tolerate an increasingly gay and lesbian lifestyle. The society is being told that it should not discriminate. That being the case the society is becoming less rigid and less formal.
Despite its intolerance of same sex marriage and other aberrations like child marriage, it is seen as collapsing.
