A salesman who worked in the construction department of Ansa McAl Trading was yesterday placed on $2M bail for embezzling over $22M from the company.
Thirty-three-year-old Apollos Manoharlall of Lot 299 Fourth Street Alexander Village, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he pleaded not guilty to five counts of fraudulent embezzlement.
Manoharlall denied the charges which stated that during the months of March and April, while being a clerk or servant at Ansa McAl Trading Limited, he embezzled $4.4M on March 17; $5.5M on March 24; $6.3M on March 28; $1.9M on March 30 and $4.5M on April 7.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The Prosecutor told the court that Manoharlall received the monies from Zhung Hu, the owner of R&S Enterprise, on the behalf of the company, and he never handed over the monies to Ansa McAl Trading Limited.
Manoharlall was represented by an Attorney who, during his bail application for his client, told the court that his client is willing to comply with any conditions attached to bail, even if it means surrendering his passport.
The lawyer further told the court that last Friday his client made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce in the Magistrates’ Courts, where he was charged for uttering a forged Bank of Nova Scotia cheque for $2M, knowing that he did not have the sufficient amount of cash to satisfy the said amount. However the matter was dismissed, since the virtual complainant told the court that he was compensated.
The lawyer further told the court that his client is not a flight risk and if granted bail he will return to court for the trial.
The Magistrate ordered the defendant to post $400,000 bail on each of the five counts of fraudulent embezzlement.
The father of one will make his next court appearance on July 17 before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for statements and assignments.
