AmCham Guyana welcomes Citibank’s opening

(Kaieteur News) – The American Chamber of Commerce in Guyana (AmCham Guyana) has congratulated Citi on the establishment of its representative office in Georgetown.

AmCham said the move is a step that reflects the growing confidence major US financial institutions are placing in Guyana’s economic trajectory. “Citi’s decision to establish a presence here is a meaningful marker of how far Guyana’s investment landscape has come,” said Iman Cummings, President of AmCham Guyana. “A global institution of this scale positioning itself to our country reflects the growing weight Guyana now carries in international financial and commercial circles,” AmCham said.

AmCham said that Guyana’s rapid GDP growth continues to accelerate, noting that the Ministry of Finance’s Mid-Year Report 2026 recorded real GDP growth of 33.3 percent in the first half of the year, with full-year growth now projected at 20.8 percent, driven substantially by the oil and gas sector, which is itself projected to grow 24.2 percent this year. The same report, AMCham said noted financial and insurance activities among the fastest-growing services subsectors, expanding 12.7 percent in the first half, alongside a 15.5 percent expansion in net domestic credit and 11.5 percent growth in private sector lending. This trajectory has drawn sustained attention from global financial institutions seeking closer proximity to government, to large-scale project financing, and to the corporate banking activity concentrated around the sector. “The arrival of a global institution of Citi’s standing signals recognition of that shift and points to the deepening coordination expected between international capital, government, and the major companies shaping the country’s energy-driven growth. AmCham Guyana looks forward to continued engagement with Citi as it builds out its presence, and to the broader benefits this kind of institutional investment brings.”

U.S-based Citibank opened its representative office at Regus building on Waterloo Street Georgetown- a move which the bank said reinforces its strong commitment to supporting Guyana’s dynamic and rapidly expanding economy.

Citi Group back in May had announced that it had received regulatory approval from the Bank of Guyana for Citibank, N.A. to establish a representative office in Georgetown. This strategic establishment reinforces Citi’s strong commitment to supporting Guyana’s dynamic and rapidly expanding economy, the bank had said. It noted that the expansion “of our unparalleled global network marks a milestone for Citi. An on-the-ground presence enables a strong understanding of local business dynamics, the culture, the regulations, and how to help clients navigate any environment. This allows us to provide unique solutions to global clients looking to invest in Guyana, and support the ambitions of Guyanese clients growing abroad.” The bank said too that the decision to establish a presence in Guyana is driven by the nation’s robust economic growth, particularly in critical areas such as infrastructure and export financing. “Citi aims to deploy its expertise to contribute significantly to Guyana’s economic development,” the bank said.  “After almost three decades of close relationship with Guyana without an on the ground presence, this new office is strategically established to enhance the delivery of products and services in the country and to strengthen our collaborative partnerships with government, its agencies, financial institutions and private sector. This underscores our commitment to supporting the nation’s economic growth and the development of LATAM,” said Julio Figueroa, Head of Citi in Latin America. This new entity will serve to facilitate access for Citi’s clients and partners to global markets, thereby supporting the country’s overall growth, development, and the strengthening of its financial infrastructure.

President Irfaan Ali said the bank’s presence here is another indication of Guyana’s growing prominence within the regional and global economic landscape. He said Citibank’s establishment in Guyana comes against the backdrop of an economy undergoing significant transformation, with expanding investment, new industries and major development projects creating greater demand for sophisticated financial services.  He said the country’s economic trajectory is positioning Guyana as an increasingly important destination for international business and investment. “Guyana is the talk of the town, that this country is on the rise and on the move,” he said, while emphasising his government’s commitment to strengthening Guyana’s global and regional standing.
