No judge assigned to hear cases
The June 2017 criminal session of the Berbice High Court opened on Tuesday with the usual pomp and ceremony outside the Berbice High Court building on Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
Leading the parade was a police contingent made up of ranks of the police B division and a police military band.
The police contingent marched off from Central Police Station, the Police headquarters at Coburg Street and Strand, and then headed along Strand New Amsterdam to the High Court accompanied by the police drum corp.
The salute and inspection was taken by Justice Franklyn Holder who was escorted by Commander of Police B Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam.
When the session was called to order Justice Holder addressed the jurors present. He informed them that he was not the presiding judge for the session, and he was only asked to open the assizes since no Judge has been assigned.
He outlined to the potential jurors some of their roles and responsibilities, and emphasized the importance of these roles in the dispensation of justice. They are to return to court on July 11, next.
The jail delivery was presented by Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Paul James. It showed that 31 persons including two women have been committed to stand trial this session.
Of that number 26 are for the capital offence of murder, two are for attempted murder and the other three are for sexual penetration.
The longest on remand are Narvin Sugrim, and Ravendranauth Mohanlall who have been incarcerated for over five years.
The two women are Hemwattie Abdulla and Seerojie Permaul. Two prisoners have indicated a willingness to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
