A construction worker yesterday made an appearance before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined $1.5M. This was after he pleaded guilty to
possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking charge.
Thirty-two-year-old Rudolph Muir, known as “Roach”, of Lot 3 Enterprise, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that between June 18 and June 19 at Woodlands Hospital he had in his possession 592 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Custom Anti Narcotics Unit Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford stated that on June 18 the accused was an outgoing passenger on Caribbean Airline to Barbados.
The court heard that while the accused was at the checkpoint he was observed acting in a suspicious manner. Ranks from the Custom Anti Narcotics Unit questioned him after which he admitted to swallowing a quantity of cocaine pellets.
He was then taken to the Woodlands Hospital where an x-ray was conducted and certain images were seen.
The prosecutor told the court that on June 18 the accused excreted a total of 72 pellets in the presence of officers.
The court heard that the accused disclosed to the ranks the name of the person who supplied him with the cocaine and the fact that he was promised US$1,700 to traffic the narcotics.
He was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson who told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner for his family, has no previous matter or pending matter.
Senior magistrate Fabayo Azore sentenced the accused to three years citing his early guilty plea and the fact that he did not waste the court’s time.
