Jun 20, 2017 Letters
Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space to respond to GRA’s letter published in your newspaper on the 15th June 2017 regarding the restriction of smartphones. I quote the Commissioner’s statement as published on 8th June 2017. “Very soon, there will be no smartphones entering my building…. both officers who work with me, and also tax payers.” There is a distinct difference between “there will be no smartphones entering my building” and there will be no use of smartphones. The former conjures up images of persons leaving their smartphones in their cars or lodging them with the security at the entrance. If the Commissioner meant the usage of phones then the public may be more understanding.
In trying to stop any unscrupulous staff from leaking information, GRA should take into consideration the inconvenience to the large majority of persons who are there to transact their business only and not to spy on others. Maybe special cameras should be installed at the point of contact between their employees and the public. This will act as a deterrent and if monitored curb any attempts to leak information. It is important to note an employee with a smartphone and data plan does not need to use a visitor’s phone to steal information.
As a matter of fact I really do not see why an employee will allow a visitor to take photographs of documents at the risk of been caught. The main concern for the Commissioner should be internal.GRA must be commended for recently constructing a modern waiting area with internet access. This is a step in the right direction.
