‘Boyo’ murder PI…Cop recounts taking statement from accused

Police Inspector Suraj Singh has recounted taking a statement from Lennox Roberts called ‘Soldier Man’, one of the three men currently on remand for the murder of Ganesh ‘Boyo’ Ramlall, owner of Regent Multiplex Mall.
Also on remand for this same murder are Fazeel ‘Javed’ Bacchus, 21, of 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Kurt ‘Banana’ Erskine, 35, of 285 Section ‘C’, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The killing occurred on July 5, 2015 at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara.
Last Friday, the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder continued before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where Inspector Singh was recalled by Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford to give evidence.
During his testimony, the police witness said that he interviewed the murder accused at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown and took a statement.
However, Attorney-at-Law Bernard De Santos, who is representing Roberts, was opposed to the statement being admitted to form part of the evidence.
De Santos argued that his client was viciously assaulted by Inspector Singh to give the statement. In the circumstances, Magistrate Liverpool said that the court would conduct a Voir Dire (trial within a trial) to ascertain the admissibility of the statement.
The PI is scheduled to continue on June 21.
Ramlall, also known as ‘Boyo’ of Lot C La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara was reportedly shot seven times about the body after bandits attacked his home. The 48-year-old businessman is reported to have just returned home from a barbecue, when he was accosted by four men, one of whom shot him to the head and chest before relieving him of jewellery and a wallet before escaping.
Earlier on in the preliminary inquiry, Police Sergeants Rodwell Sarrabo and Salaish Roopnarine were called by the prosecution to give evidence. At the time of the murder, all three policemen were attached to the Major Crimes Investigation Unit CID Headquarters.
