Act now or the violent youth culture will grow

Dear Editor,
A lot of people have discussed what to do about idle youth in Guyana. I contend that idle youths are a symptom and not the cause of Guyana’s social ills. From the late 1970’s, Guyana started to show social upheaval and the underlying problems were never addressed. The economic and governmental systems in Guyana thus far have produce poverty and crime. Less than 30 percent of Guyanese enjoy a prosperous quality of life. The system Guyana has offered has very little support for the disadvantaged. Logically, a parallel economy was created because human beings are designed to survive. The reason Guyana has not gone into civil war is partly because people can survive using the informal economy. This economy produces crime and indiscipline.
If a more inclusive economic and social system is not implemented in the near future, a more destructive youth culture will expand. The statistics on violent crime and poverty suggest that there are some correlations. Make sure every citizen have a living wage and social problems will be mitigated. It seems utopian but it is pragmatic. The data is there to support this. You reap what you sow,
