Mother’s Day has been designated for honouring mothers, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society.
Once you become a mother it cannot be reversed. Once the process starts, it is there for life, says Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence.
Yesterday, many took the time to express gratitude to their mothers – whether biological or persons who have taken up the roles of upbringing them – by way of lavish gifts, poems, songs, dining etc.
The patients in the Maternity Ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation were once again treated to gifts by ANSA McAL Limited and Toucan Industries.
Fiona George and Fabiana Domingo got the best Mother’s Day present with the birth of their baby boy and girl respectively.
They were also graced with the presence of Minister Lawrence, who described mothers as “special creatures.” The Minister remarked that mothers are an asset to Guyana, “since we can only increase the population through them, of course with the help of the male.”
“They carry that fetus. Even from birth they cannot give up their role; after birth they are still there and I want them to know that the future of Guyana lies in their hands.”
According to the Minister, nurturing a child does not only mean providing food, clothing and shelter. She added that it also means giving the child the best moral teachings and upbringing.
“Potential mothers, I trust that you will discuss becoming a mother. And you will not be one of those women who just find themselves in the position of motherhood. But would be something that is planned… that they will seek out the various counseling agencies within the Ministry at the various clinics and at Non-Governmental Organizations which can help them to plan their family.” The Minster also urged potential mothers to ensure that they are in a position to embark on this new journey “You cannot reverse it… you cannot reverse being a mother. Once that process starts, that’s it, and it’s there for life.”
Minister Lawrence said that those who have lost their mothers are not truly motherless, since there are role models who are willing to assist in their upbringing.
“Despite their biological mother not being around I am glad that they are in a place named Guyana. Because in Guyana, they can find so many mothers in their aunts, in their neighbours, in their workmates and that is our culture. And I want them to know that they too are loved…there is someone out there who loves them and whatever pain they may feel today (I want) to let them know that God is in charge,” Minister Lawrence noted.
