Tchaiko Ruramai Kwayana, called Mama, passed away in San Diego, California on Saturday May 6 last. Tchaiko Kwayana, an educator and American civil rights activist, was the spouse of Eusi Kwayana, long-standing Guyanese social and political activist and former co-leader of the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA).
Originally from Georgia, the former Ann Cook changed her name to Tchaiko before her marriage to Eusi Kwayana in Georgetown, Guyana in 1971.
She lived in Guyana for a number of years before re-emigrating to the USA.
She was active in the anti-dictatorship movement in Guyana against the then Forbes Burnham regime. In the 1980s she was active in the political and social struggle and in women’s organisations including Women against Terror, a grassroots offshoot movement of the WPA.
After her return to the USA, she continued to teach and co-founded HUG (Helping Uplift Guyanese), a group established to assist the social and economic plight of the Guyanese working people.
The Kwayanas raised three children.
On May 16, there will be a homegoing celebration for the life and work of the late Ms Kwayana in Atlanta, Georgia.
The celebration for Mama will be at 11 am at the Shrine Of The Black Madonna 960 Ralph David Abernathy.
