Dear Editor,
Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States once said that, ‘You can do what you can do, and sometimes you can do it even better than you think you can’. This quote aptly fits the Prime Minister’s Representative for Region 6, Mr Gobin Harbhajan. This man has arisen above the expectation of everyone and his contribution towards the social and economic development of Region 6 towers above all the rest. His dedication and commitment toward these are exceptional.
Another noteworthy attribute is the fact that while the other PM’s representatives are relatively unknown and another has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, Mr Harbhajan has been the new face of the AFC in Region 6 even overshadowing that of his erstwhile colleague, Dr Ramayya. In addition, he has been able to work along well with not only his AFC members and the APNU members, but he has been getting strong recognition from even the opposition side.
PPP members would frequent his office to seek his input in resolving various issues almost daily and he would never refuse them though he is often criticized by his own colleagues for this. Fortunately, he has been building bridges across the political and racial divide where top officials from all the political parties have failed. Moreover, what is amazing is the fact that he is not doing this for political mileage or monetary gains – this guy is a great humanitarian who simply loves to help people.
Another noteworthy characteristic is the fact that Mr Harbhajan is pro-developmental. He has been instrumental in bringing top government officials and even ministers to Berbice to address both social and economic developmental problems and he has a good working relationship with the RDC Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, the REO, the Estate Managers, the NDCs, businesses, Chambers of Commerce and religious leaders. He does all of this while interacting and listening to the complaints of nearly 20 persons on a daily basis.
Other government appointed officers in the Region should emulate this man since nothing is ever heard about these people. This is also such a great variance in performance what public servants are contributing to the Region. Some of them hardly do anything on a daily basis.
This man is also a great visionary and at one time it was thought that he would be replacing Dr Ramayya as the REO in Region 6. Region 6 has two DREOs and an Accountant already but what it lacks is an REO with a vision for development, not someone who is only adept at spending taxpayers’ monies. Mr Harbhajan is the best candidate for that position since he is aware of the socio-developmental needs of Region 6. What is notable also is the fact that he delivers; he does not campaign. The best thing the Prime Minister has done for Region 6 is to appoint this man as his representative.
Raj Lakram
