Police Sergeant Junior Blair, a detective stationed at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, testified Wednesday when the preliminary inquiry into the murder of Debra Blackman continued before Chief Magistrate
Ann McLennan.
Shelton George, 22, of Lot 146 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara is currently on remand for the indictable offence. George has been confined to a wheelchair for the past few years as a result of a gunshot wound he received to the back while in Suriname.
Blackman, 48, of Critchlow Circle, Tucville, Georgetown was performing duties as a waitress at the Delicious Restaurant on D’Urban Street, Wortmanville when she was shot dead by an unmasked gunman on April 23, 2014. The ordeal was captured on Close Circuit Television (CCTV).
During his testimony, Sergeant Blair said that he is attached to the Forensic Video Analysis Unit. According to the police witness, some of his responsibilities include the extraction and analyzing videos from Digital Video Recorder and cell phones.
The murder accused is also charged with attempted murder over shooting former Magistrate Fazil Azeez on April 25, 2015 at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
According to reports, Azeez was shot during a robbery by a man who fled leaving a bag of money behind. Kaieteur News understands that the shooter went to a construction site where Azeez was building a house, under the pretext that he was looking for a job. The shooter reportedly approached Azeez to inquire about work, during which time he shot him.
During George’s initial court appearance, his lawyer Melvin Duke, had argued that there is no eyewitness to the alleged murder and that his client was charged based on video surveillance, which he said, is of very poor quality.
George had pending matters for robbery under-arms before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts.
Based on reports, George is still under investigation by police for the murder of Bernadette Campbell, 40, who was shot in a minibus at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara in August 2014. Campbell was sitting in the front seat of a minibus when she was shot to the stomach by a bandit who stopped the minibus and demanded that its occupants exit the vehicle, after which two rounds were discharged hitting the woman.
